The Remodeling Process - Construction Timeline

While every remodeling project is unique, there are common construction elements to all. Here are the typical steps to expect for a kitchen renovation, and the usual order they occur in. We’ve identified the extra steps needed for an addition or a bathroom.

Remember that the order is constant, but the timing of each step can vary considerably, depending on the individual project. This is especially true during the inspection stages, where a backlog at your local building department can mean waits in scheduling an inspector’s visit.

Dig for addition foundation
Pour concrete footings
Footing inspection
Pour concrete foundation
Foundation inspection
Waterproof and backfill
Demolition and framing
Exterior windows, doors, trim, siding and roofing
Rough plumbing (supply, waste and vent pipes)
Rough electrical (wire, cable and plug/switch/fixture boxes)
Rough plumbing and rough electrical inspections (any order)
Framing inspection
Insulation
Insulation inspection
Cement board for shower
Blueboard and plaster
Tile shower or tub
Install cabinets
Template counters (After the counters are templated, it usually takes 2-3 weeks for delivery, and not much work happens during this time.)
Tile backsplash
Finish plumbing (sink and faucets)
Painting
Finish electrical (fixtures, outlets and switch plates)
Finish plumbing and finish electrical inspections (any order)
Final inspection by building inspector after all other inspections are complete
